As an audiologist — and someone who understands the magic of listening to my favourite DJs on stage — there’s nothing like the energy of a rave. The heavy bass, laser lights, and hours of dancing to electronic beats. But amidst all that euphoria is a harsh reality that so many music lovers overlook: the sound levels at raves and festivals are high enough to cause permanent hearing damage — and I know this first-hand because I live with permanent tinnitus.
This post is for people who love the music, the culture, the late nights, and the freedom of the dance floor — but who also want to keep hearing clearly for decades to come.
The Decibels Are Louder Than You Think
Most raves blast music at 100–110 decibels (dB) — sometimes even higher in enclosed spaces. For context:
• 85 dB (like city traffic) is the threshold where prolonged exposure starts damaging your ears.
• At 100 dB, it takes just 15 minutes for hearing damage to begin.
• At 110 dB, it can take less than 2 minutes.
And because sound damage is cumulative, the effects add up with every event.
What Hearing Damage Feels Like
You might not notice the damage right away. But over time, you may experience:
• Tinnitus (a constant or intermittent ringing in the ears)
• Sensitivity to loud sounds
• Difficulty hearing conversations in noisy environments
• A sensation like your ears are always “clogged” or “muffled”
Unfortunately, once hearing is damaged, it can’t be restored naturally. Hearing aids help — but there’s no cure for permanent hearing loss.
Earplugs: But Don’t You Want to Hear the Music?
There’s a myth that earplugs ruin the music experience. That’s simply not true — if you’re using the right ones.
High-fidelity earplugs are designed to reduce volume evenly across frequencies, so the music still sounds rich and clear — just quieter. You’ll still feel the bass and hear the drop, but without the dangerous spike in sound pressure levels.
You’ll still be able to hear the music clearly, be immersed in the sound experience — just at safer levels. Talking to friends (old and new) is actually much easier with earplugs!
Everybody’s Doing It
More and more ravers, DJs, and artists are openly wearing earplugs — and encouraging others to do the same. It’s not a sign of weakness or being “boring.” It’s a sign you’re serious about your love for music and in it for the long run. Your hearing is a massive part of your connection to the music and the world. Taking care of it is an act of love — for yourself.
Rave Responsibly
You don’t have to sacrifice the music you love to protect your ears. Wearing hearing protection is a small adjustment that makes a huge difference.
Attach your earplugs to your keys — that way, you’ll never forget them. Your future self (and your ears) will thank you.
